Ann-Marie Giglio

When COVID slowly drained my small business, I took stock of my life, packed three suitcases, and moved to San Francisco to complete an MFA, a lifelong dream I’ve had. Now that I’ve done that, I’m launching my third career as a writer with a wide-angle view and a deep dive.

What am I working on now?

The long-term project is an historical novel set in 19th century Manhattan which tells the story of a young woman trying to navigate the city’s patriarchy and nascient capitalism to carve our a life for herself as a single woman and an abortionist/midwife. As public sentiments change, she also has to dodge the attention of a self-appointed crusader who has sworn to shut every abortionist in the city.

The exciting news is I am working on my first novel, The Sisterhood of Care, a historical fiction. It’s about a gutsy woman in 19th century Manhattan who takes to wearing trousers so she can get from the world of men what she wants: an education and a career as an abortionist. To stay updated on the progress and my other writings about women omitted from HIStory, check out my substack or drop your email into the form to the right and we’ll let you know how it’s going.
